Fur Rondy 2011

Fur Rondy is the celebration of the year here in Anchorage.  We took the kids to the ceremonial start to the Iditorod on the last Saturday in February.  It was cold, bitter cold outside, but we went anyways.  First there's the Grand Parade where you can see all kinds of cool things from Alaska, both in the parade and in little shops on the street.  The culture up here is quite diverse and is very interesting to learn about.  After the parade the mushers start their race around the streets of Anchorage.  I didn't get any pictures of the mushers this year, but it was fun to watch them with their dog sled teams racing through the middle of town.

We didn't last too long out on the street.  I don't know what the wind chill was, but we were shivering by the time we got back to the car.  Aisley was tucked away inside my coat so she stayed nice and warm.

Did you know there are 4 types of bears in Alaska?  Polar bears, black bears, brown bears (grizzly bears), and pink bears!  The pink ones are completely harmless.
Today's outing was short lived but we still had fun.  We sipped hot chocolate in the car and watched all the people walking by shiver, it was entertaining.
