After School Special

This is not the typical after school special you all are thinking of.  Our family has become immersed in the Alaska Native culture, specifically the Yupik culture.  I found out that there was going to be a seal skinning at the Alaska Native Heritage Center and asked if we could come and watch.  It was very educational and interesting.  A very unique Alaskan experience.
We watched as they butchered the seal.  The natives here in Alaska have been hunting seals for thousands of years.  No part of the seal is wasted, they have a use for everything.  Part of the woman's job was to braid the intestines so that it can be cooked.
Not too shabby!  It was kindof fun to braid it, not too hard either.

Harlen got to have his first taste of raw seal meat.  He LOVED it!  He kept asking for more and seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself.

Jon, Ila and I also tasted the raw seal meat.  Ila told me it tasted like strawberries.  Jon said it was similar to raw chicken meat in texture.  I gagged a very small piece down, and was queasy for the rest of the night.  I'm proud of myself for at least trying it.  It was mostly the thought of eating raw seal meat that made me gag.  It didn't taste horrible, definitely different though.  Harlen also chewed on some of the seal blubber and loved that too.  He's not a picky guy, he likes good food, and to him, this was great!

We took home some of the cooked rib meat and had seal stew for dinner.  (I ate brownies instead.)  Jon and the kids ate all of their stew, Jon even took some to work the next day for lunch.  Crazy huh?  Only in Alaska, and only with a Native Alaskan son.

If you want to check out the link it's a story about what we watched.  We are even in the video in the background.
